Q&A WITH MAKE-UP ARTIST, HANNAH MURRAY
Tell us about the look we are seeing on Helmut Lang’s Fall 2013 runway.
A monochromatic look based around creamy polished skin, a subtle glossed mushroom eye and either strong dark brows or bleached brows depending on the girls hair color. It’s strong in it’s simplicity and absence of color.
What new beauty item can’t you live without?
The new NARS brow pencils - they have a waxy texture which makes defining brows foolproof. You’re not going to get a hard solid shape which is never a good look!
Any industry skincare tips to surviving fashion week?
Good old fashioned advice - water, good food and sleep. And SK-II masks are miracle workers (although I’ve run out before we’ve even begun!).
What beauty trend do you see dominating the runways this season?
An easy boyish beauty with a tough edge - whether that comes from a heavier brow or black rimmed eyes next to chocolate lids, I feel I’m leaning towards giving the girls a polished darkness.
The Helmut Lang girl must have a muted metallic cream eyeshadow in her make-up bag.
I’m using NARS Cythère Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil , which gives the most beautiful tonal sheen to the eye. It gives an effortless modern edge to your look without looking make up-y.

Q&A WITH HAIR STYLIST, PAUL HANLON
Tell us about the inspiration behind this season’s Helmut Lang hair.
This season was more about the girls and casting then the hair. We kept the look simple, pure and monochromatic. The girls were given either black, brown or ash blonde hair. On 75% of the models we used a temporary color mousse to give the hair some rich texture.
What secret product / tool must you always have on hand for the shows?
CHI Helmet Head Hair Spray to hold the looks in place and TIGI Bed Head Superstar Queen Spray to thicken the hair and give it texture.
Your most memorable fashion week moment is _______
Having the opportunity to work with the brilliant Alexander McQueen in Paris. It was an overwhelming and inspiring experience. He is a man that is truly missed.
What’s the simplest way to recreate this runway look at home?
After you wash your hair don’t blow dry it and add some light mousse. Pull your hair back in a low pony tail and twist it in a tight knot. Let it dry for a bit, then take out the knot and blow your hair out on cool.
You travel a ton for all the fashion weeks, what’s your favorite part about NYC?

GREY AREA FOR HELMUT LANG: ENGINE BLOCKS BY SHELTER SERRA
For this series, New York based artist Shelter Serra cast vintage engines that have come to define the American car culture of the late 1960’s and 1970’s. Five unique car engines were used to create 17 custom sculptures for Helmut Lang. Engine Blocks will be displayed in our stores from November 7– January 7, 2013.
Shelter, who is the nephew of American sculptor Richard Serra, is well known for his cast-silicone sculptures of Fake Roley Bracelets, Birkin bags, and Beer Cans. He explores a sculptural practice of casting everyday objects in unique materials to replicate archetypes of our culture.
Q&A WITH ARTIST, SHELTER SERRA
What model engines are these casts from?
Among the five car engines are the 351 Windsor V8 from the 1969 Ford Mustang, a 426 Chrysler Hemi Long Block, and a few Chevy 454 “Tall Decks.” The engine blocks have been reduced to a solitary form, cast with injected foam that has been uniquely dyed in a variety of colors.
What is the process and material?
The foam injection process is an extension of conventional injection molding. First, an inert gas is introduced to a liquid polymer. Then, the high density polyurethane foam is used to fill an empty mold creating a solid object. It is a very similar material and process akin to the fabrication of car interiors and machine prototypes.
What is the inspiration for the work?
This project developed from a sculptural practice of casting everyday objects in unique materials and replicating archetypes of our culture. Through altering the materiality and context of the engine blocks, aspects of our everyday environment are reexamined.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
California native and New York-based artist, Shelter Serra transforms his ideas into a wide range of media from drawing and print to sculpture and video. Born in 1972, Serra studied studio art at the University of California at Santa Cruz and received a Master of Fine Art from the Rhode Island School of Design. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at galleries including Cystem Gallery (Tokyo), Space 1026 (Philadelphia), Perry Rubenstein Gallery (New York), and Renwick Gallery (New York).

If you could cook for anyone, who would it be and why?

Tell us about your “ah-ha” moment that made you start Sous Style.
My ‘ah-ha’ came from an ‘oh no.’ I started Sous Style because for years I hated food, my bedroom and I wanted to live in a villa in Tuscany. I made friends with these two sides of my life, food and home and fell in love with the idea of homemaking. Furthermore, I realized no one was talking to my generation of homemakers. I’m all about living a fashionably imperfect life full of sexy things in food, home and lifestyle. Hey, why not live your ‘best life ever’ now?
