GUEST BLOGGER SERIES Q&A: PIPPA LORD OF SOUS STYLE
Tell me about the Fall 12 Helmut Lang / HELMUT “daily uniform” essentials you selected.
My favorite things are a black blazer, black stretch pants (it feels like I’m at the gym but way chicer and the best ‘go to item) and white T’s. All of which HL does perfectly.
What’s your favorite JAM to cook too?
Frank Ocean - he is one sexy and talented man.
In the kitchen you swear by ____.
GOOGLE.COM
If you could cook for anyone, who would it be and why?
I wouldn’t cook - I’d mix up a few awesome cocktails and small bites for ‘the women’ - Hillary, Oprah, Tina and Arianna Huffington. I’m sure after the first cocktail world peace would be sorted. I need to send them an invite via paperless post or something….
Tell us about your “ah-ha” moment that made you start Sous Style.
My ‘ah-ha’ came from an ‘oh no.’ I started Sous Style because for years I hated food, my bedroom and I wanted to live in a villa in Tuscany. I made friends with these two sides of my life, food and home and fell in love with the idea of homemaking. Furthermore, I realized no one was talking to my generation of homemakers. I’m all about living a fashionably imperfect life full of sexy things in food, home and lifestyle. Hey, why not live your ‘best life ever’ now?
Best meal you’ve ever had was at ___.
I love it at Playa De Los Aristas that is located in the surf village of Montezuma in Costa Rica. It’s a super low key but elegant dining experience right on the beach.
What is NY’s best kept secret?
Her name is Elva. She is a fabulous soulful Russian woman who does the best ‘cheap and shriek’ wax ever while counseling clients on life’s ‘big questions.’
Your motto is ____.
I have a different motto for most days of the week but today it is ‘what would madonna do?’
Favorite site for discovering new recipes?
sousstyle.com
Favorite coffee table book you own is _____.
Bob Richardson, House and Garden Almanac 1973 and Derek Blasberg’s Classy to keep me in check.
Your vice is ______

Reading any books you can’t put down?
Ashamedly, most of my reading is online these days. I’ve always been a read-a-good-book-in-one-sitting kind of girl, so lately when I have small windows of time I keep it light with whatever short online article is available. I’d love to have some time to just chill and read a book. What is downtime?? (nonexistent)
Tell us about your “ah-ha” moment that made you start blogging.
Mine was more of a heh? moment when I started blogging. The “ah-ha” didn’t come til later when I finally figured out what I was doing. I just haphazardly started, not really knowing much, and eventually realized I wanted to be different and offer something other than what was already out there. I wasn’t seeing a whole lot of variety at the time.

Mostly Valencia, the occasional Amaro, and when I’m feeling especially broody, X-Pro.

Any new digital discoveries?
I really can’t afford to take on any more digital platforms. The analog 90s me has been maxed out.
Your vice is ______
eBay :)
What’s your current social media addiction and why?
Instagram is taking over my digital presence. It’s the easiest, quickest, most painless posting method. I try to keep my blog, tumblr, twitter, and Instagram all different. It’s a challenge, but I personally am not a fan of people’s various feeds being all the same content repeated. It’s like what’s the point? Why not do just one then? I think in the long run people appreciate getting glimpses of different things.

GUEST BLOGGER SERIES Q&A: CHRIS CANTALINI OF GORILLA VS. BEAR FEATURING LEAD SINGER, DEE DEE OF DUM DUM GIRLS
Dee Dee - Tell us about the Fall 12 Helmut Lang / HELMUT essentials you selected.
It is very easy for me to wear Helmut Lang considering the color palette, loose but structured cuts, and gorgeous textures. Simple, sharp and lots of black. I’d never seen anything like these Midnight Floral boots, an almost tie-died marble leather. I am a total sucker for ankle boots, and the red popped in contrast with everything else. The Burnished Suede Tall Boots looked like a challenge as well as a statement. You don’t even need to wear anything else of note. A white tee shirt and necklace with black skintight boots up to your mid-thighs? Perfect. I loved the shoulder structure and leather detailing on the Wool Viscose Blazer. It added an instant polish to an otherwise very underwhelming pairing of a few basics of my own. The striking marbled leather Drift Print Belt  was a way to break up an all-black ensemble, this worked very well. I plan on incorporating this into my stage wear. The Lush Voile top, is my ideal top - tight but comfortable sleeves and a flattering loose bodice. The cropped front hem works well with all the high-waisted shorts and pants to which I’m loyal. Of course my cat ruined it during the shoot, but now the blouse and that day will forever be fused in memory.
Chris - What made you select lead singer, Dee Dee from Dum Dum Girls as your musical muse for this project?
I’ve been a huge fan of Dum Dum Girls for almost 4 years now — back then it was Dee Dee’s solo project — and I’ve really enjoyed seeing her sound evolve. The band played our SXSW showcase a couple of years ago, and I was blown away by their live show. Their last full-length “Only in Dreams” was one of the best records of 2011, and based on what I’ve heard so far, their new “End of Daze” EP could be her prettiest work yet. Dee Dee also has a very distinctive, uncompromising personal style that seems sort of effortless, and that made her a natural choice. And I had a feeling she’d be a fan of Helmut Lang’s Fall ‘12 line (I was right, she even has a cat named Helmut).
Chris- What’s your Jam of the moment?
So many jams at the moment, there’s no way I could name just one. Let’s go with Ariel Pink’s “Mature Themes,” Usher’s “Climax” (jam of the year), Moons’ “Bloody Mouth,” Laurel Halo’s “Thaw,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools,” White Denim’s “Darlene,” Mac Demarco’s “My Kind of Woman,” Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland’s “The Narcissist,” and all of Jessie Ware’s “Devotion” and Chromatics’ “Kill For Love” LPs.
Chris -  Your all time favorite cult-film is ____
I’m not even sure what still qualifies as a cult film in 2012. Maybe “City of God,” which I think was considered “cult” for a while there. It remains one of my favorite films ever. Or if we’re talking true cult films, in that no one ever saw them: there’s an insane Swedish exploitation film from the ’70s I found out about last year called “Thriller: A Cruel Picture,” that was allegedly one of Tarantino’s inspirations for “Kill Bill.” I also feel like the John C. Reilly comedy “The Promotion” was pretty underrated. If Harmony Korine’s next film “Spring Breakers” ends up being as ridiculous as it looks, that could be a contender too.
Chris - Tell us about your “ah-ha” moment that made you start blogging.
I can’t recall a specific revelatory “ah-ha” moment, as I wasn’t really that aware of music blogging as a platform or movement when I started Gorilla vs. Bear in early 2005. It was more of a gradual inclination  to archive things — in this case, all of the brilliant, under-appreciated music that was coming out at the time — and to share with friends that were getting too busy to do the digging themselves anymore.
Chris - What new indie act should we have on our radar?
There’s a really good new band from Toronto called Diana. I think they only have two songs on their Soundcloud at this point, but I was lucky enough to get a copy of their excellent debut album, and I have a feeling people are going to love it. Also: Ryan Hemsworth, Laurel Halo, Fear of Men, Disclosure, Jessie Ware.
Chris- What music festival(s) are you most looking forward/ have been to this year?
We just held our own little mini-fest here in Dallas called GvsB II, and while I’m obviously biased, it was unreal. Chromatics put on the best show I’ve seen all year. Also, although it’s not technically a summer fest, I’m always psyched about Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest. It's probably my favorite festival, and this year's lineup is inspired as always.
Chris - The anthem this Fall is _____
Most likely something from Holy Other’s new album “Held” or the xx’s “Coexist.”
Chris - Are you on Spotify and/ or Soundcloud? Who are your favorite people to follow?
I love Spotify and Soundcloud, both play an integral part in my search for new music for the blog and for my SiriusXM radio show. My favorite people to follow on Soundcloud include Johnny Jewel (of Glass Candy/Chromatics), Nicolas Jaar, and an endless list of great labels.
Chris - As a blogger constantly traveling for shows, what’s the coolest destination you’ve been to?
We’ve been invited to festivals in Norway, Belgium, and Montreal in the past year or so (all very cool), but the coolest place to me is Big Sur. The Henry Miller Library is in the middle of a redwood forest,  easily my favorite place in the world to see a show.
Chris - We can’t get enough of Instagram. What’s your favorite filter?
Big fan of Walden for its washed-out effect and Rise for its warm/faded vibes, but I think I have to go with #nofilter.
Chris - Top 3 Favorite personalities you follow on Twitter are….
Jose Canseco, Grimes, and NBA player Marquise Daniels.
Chris - You never leave the house without _____
My iPhone, and lately, my 1-year-old daughter.

Not exactly new, but I’ve been using Spotify and Instagram daily for the past year or so, just like everyone else. Also the Yo Gabba Gabba iPhone app.

GUEST BLOGGER SERIES Q&A: COLUMBINE SMILLE
Tell me about the Fall 12 Helmut Lang / HELMUT essentials you selected.
I choose the Voltage Rib Tee and Kinetic Jersey Skirt, because you always need great basics that fit and go with everything. The Drift Print Dress is definitely a more versatile piece than you might think. Just throw on some fabulous sunnies, your favorite accessories and you have the perfect look for a Fall getaway!
Best meal you’ve ever had was at _____
El Chico Perro in Bilbao. I love that restaurant!
What’s currently trending in your wardrobe?
Comfortable jersey pieces, boxy jackets and baggy pants.
Who / What are your main sources of style inspiration?
My grandma has always had a strong impact on me. She’s the kind of lady that walks around the house wearing leopard printed blouses, caftans and golden heels. Other than that, I’m  inspired by strong women who have the ability to transform their visions into reality and possess that sort of confidence that shines through and creates an aura around them.
What music festival / concert are you most looking forward to?
I’m really looking forward to Way out West and seeing Florence and the Machine, Hot Chip and Bon Iver.
Reading any books you can’t put down?
Joan Didions “Blue Nights” has put a spell on me.
Tell us about your “ah-ha” moment that made you start blogging.
I actually started out blogging with a close friend of mine. As we looked at other blogs and had a big interest in fashion and style we felt that we could add something new to the fashion blog community, something, I don’t know, a bit more personal in terms of style. People in Sweden tend to want to look the same and are a bit afraid of standing out. I felt it was important to bring the catwalk trends into real life in a sort of unpredictable way. I really wanted to spice things up a bit and make people think about how to wear pieces in new ways but still keep it wearable. Back then it was just for fun, I’d never imagined that the blog would grow this big and get this kind of international interest that it has today.
What’s your current social media addiction?
Definitely Instagram! You can follow me @columbinesmille
Favorite coffee table book you own is _____
Mario Testino’s “Let Me In,” “Henri Matisse” and “Gypset Style” by Assouline books.  Also, the Yves Saint Laurent book.
You never leave the house without _____
My watch, multiple bracelets and necklaces from Stéphanie Radenac and Maria Nildotter. I can’t live without accessories!

The outerwear that I chose conveys the overriding protective theme of the season - the big hooded puffa and the oversized fur collar on the leather jacket are all good for pulling up to your face to protect you from the elements.  Then I chose some of the printed fluid pieces such as the jersey skirt and the printed chiffon dress which are always such a feature in Helmut Lang.

Bloc Party’s new track Octopus
Your all time favorite cult-film is ____
Todd Solondz’s Welcome to the Dollhouse

Not really a secret but Fox & Fawn vintage in Greenpoint is great.
Reading any books you can’t put down?
Re-reading Lucy Siegle’s “To Die For”

GUEST BLOGGER SERIES Q&A: PHIL OH OF STREET PEEPER
Tell me about the Fall 12 Helmut Lang / HELMUT essentials you selected.
Uhh I picked them because they looked cool and I love color and print, so I was immediately drawn to the midnight floral print leggings and jacket.  It’s fun and still feels like Helmut Lang.  The Mixed Media Dress was a stand-out at the show, and I was excited to see the runway piece had actually gone into production and was hanging on the showroom rack.
What’s your Jam of the moment?
I’ve been revisiting my Jam of the late 00’s, The MFA’s “The Difference it Makes” (Superpitcher Remix)
Your all time favorite cult-film is ____
The Warriors
What’s the last great art show you’ve seen?
I loved the Francesca Woodman exhibition at the Guggenheim, and I really like most of the shows I’ve seen at 47 Canal gallery.
Best meal you’ve ever had was at _____
Rafa’s. It’s a simple seafood grill in Roses, Spain.  It’s a town more famous for El Bulli, but I actually would prefer to return for a second helping of their baby squid, clams, red shrimp, white tuna, and a bottle of cava.
What music festival/ concert are you most looking forward to this summer?
Outside Lands festival in San Francisco.  I’d basically go just to see Stevie Wonder and Grandaddy.  Grandaddy was one of my favorite bands of the early 00’s, and is doing a mini comeback-tour on the West Coast.  I love how it’s kinda cold in SF during August.
Reading any books you can’t put down?
I just finished a book called “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline.  It’s a super-geeky sci-fi novel about a post-apocalyptic world where everyone lives in a virtual reality world obsessed with 80s pop culture, but mostly about video games.
Tell us about your “ah-ha” moment that made you start blogging.
I figured it would be something to do to pass the time?  I actually debated whether to even start a street-style blog since there was already TWO others I knew of at the time (The Sartorialist and Hel-Looks)
Favorite coffee table book you own is _____
The Eleven Madison Park cookbook.  Not that I could ever recreate any of their dishes…
Have any summer getaways planned?
Does Paris for the menswear and couture shows count?  I guess that’s work though, so hmmm, maybe not. I try to stay home and do nothing during the summer, but I need to get a new air conditioner first.
Your vice is ______
Airlines Miles and Miller High Life
